LTS Adult Learn to Sail Program

.

Connect with the sport of sailing in a safe, fun, and supportive learning environment!

.

The LTS Adult Learn to Sail program provides adults the opportunity to learn the sport of sailing in the safe, fun, high-quality learning environment that LTS is famous for.  The program has been designed in response to the many requests from the adults in the Harbor Springs sailing community to offer an opportunity to become introduced to the sport of sailing—or expand existing sailing skills.

The curriculum has been developed according to the standards established by US Sailing, and the teaching will be led by US Sailing Certified Instructors and Coaches from LTS.  The skills taught in the program will be adapted according to the skill level of the group in the class, and tailored to the specific goals and desired outcomes of each sailor.  These can range from basic sailing skills—parts of a sailboat, points of sail, basic steering—to intermediate topics such as sail trim and steering to telltales to advanced topics related to the sport of racing.

The program will be taught in in LTS J/70s, a stable (yet high-performance) keelboat. The J/70 is ideal for this role, with a large open cockpit, simple sailplan, and responsive steering. The skills learned on a J/70 are easily transferrable to larger and different types of boats, and the family-oriented local J/70 fleet (the fastest growing local fleet) is an excellent entry point into the local Harbor Springs sailing scene.

For summer 2017, we will be offering two four-week sessions on alternating Thursday nights throughout the summer.  Classes begin at 4:15 on the LTYC porch for a brief onshore introductory lesson, followed by rigging the boats and heading out into the Harbor or the Little Traverse Bay. Each evening will be designed to teach a specific set of skills, with on-the-water drills reinforcing the lessons introduced on shore.  We will be back on shore by 7:00 or 7:30 (depending on wind) to de-rig and do a short debrief.  On Thursday nights, the LTYC bar will be open and the Thursday Night BBQ will be in full swing for after-class socializing.

To ensure optimal learning and safety, our classes have very limited enrollment—just 10 sailors per four-week session. Be sure to check your dates before signing up, because we won’t be able to accommodate makeup classes, unfortunately.  The cost will be $425 for the session. Register below. We expect spots to fill quickly, so don’t delay.

The Program

4:15pm – 4:30-5:00pm — On-Shore Work, Boat Rigging

The evening begins with an on-shore briefing / “chalk talk” tailored to the interests and experience of the sailors. We will cover issues such as how to rig and setup boats, sailing techniques, some basic racing questions, and introduce the evening’s drills.

5:00pm – 7:00pm — On-the-Water Coaching

Starting around 5:00, we will head out on the water for some drills based on the on-shore work of the evening. While on the water, LTS coaches will be on hand for coaching and instruction, though the goal is for the students to be the primary sailors of the boats.  At about 7:00pm, we will return to the dock, de-rig the boats, and have a very short debrief sessions.

After the program the Little Traverse Yacht Club bar will be open and will be hosting a BBQ.

In Summer 2017, we will offer this program on Thursdays starting in mid June ending in mid-August, in two separate four-week sessions. All sessions will meet at the LTYC/LTS waterfront – 383 E. Bay Street in Harbor Springs.

Thursday, July 27

Thursday, August 10

Session B

Thursday, July 6

Thursday, July 20

Thursday, August 3

What you need to bring:  Lifejackets must be worn shore-to-shore for all LTS programs, so we recommend bringing a US Coast Guard approved lifejacket that fits you well.  (If you don’t have one we have a few that may work.) Wear appropriate shoes for sailing — never bare feet or flip flops.  Old tennis shoes work well.  Depending on the weather you may want a windbreaker and/or spray gear to keep spray or rain off.  Hats and sunglasses are important (as are leashes for them!).  Apply sunscreen as needed.

Cost

The fee for each four-week session is $425.
