One evening a week (usually Wednesdays at 5:00pm) LTS offers BUG RACING free for program participants.
Bug Racing is a super-simple, low-key introduction to the basics of sailboat racing, designed for our younger sailors. Using our fleet of 9-ft long Bugs, we set up a small triangular race course just off the shore along Bay Street in downtown Harbor Springs. The starting sequence is three-minute dinghy-style (with horn countdowns), and several LTS coaches are on hand in coach boats to walk the new racers through the process.
The result is a spectacularly good time! The new racers get a gentle introduction to the sport, valuable experience in maneuvering their boats in a small area, and some one-on-one coaching in a good-natured competitive atmosphere. Parents and families get to see their young sailors in action. All in one of the most beautiful harbors in the world.
The sailors love Bug Racing, but so do the spectators! The close proximity of the shoreline and the running commentary from the LTS coaches (and kids!) mean that it’s easy to watch the excitement and all the action from the shoreline (the park between the Harbor master’s office and LTS is a great vantage point!). And don’t miss the final race of the evening, when the staff and willing parents take up the challenge of Bug Racing!
Who can race: Any sailor in the LTS program is eligible, though it is primarily intended for our younger sailors just getting comfortable with skippering.
What do you need: a lifejacket, sailing footwear, and a readiness for fun!
How much does it cost: Nothing! This is a free activity for all LTS families.
