The LTS Adult Learn to Sail program provides adults and families the opportunity to get involved in sailing in a fun and casual racing environment!
This program is designed to offer three new adult sailing opportunities.
- First, it will provide community members the opportunity to learn how to sail in a fun, social group environment.
- Second, it will provide an opportunity for community members to build their racing skills in a low-key, supportive program.
- Third, it will provide access to sailing in Harbor Springs, one of the best sailing venues in the world.
The curriculum has been developed by and the teaching will be led by LTS Teaching and Coaching Staff. The sailing will be in LTS-provided J/70s, a stable yet high-performance keelboat. We will enroll a maximum of 12 sailors per evening.
4:00pm – 4:30-5:00pm On-Shore Work, Boat Rigging
The evening begins with an on-shore briefing / “chalk talk” tailored to the interests and experience of the sailors. We will cover issues such as how to rig and setup boats, sailing techniques, some basic racing questions, and introduce the evening’s drills. From there we will rig and board the J/70s to head onto the water for drills emphasizing basics of sailing, racing, crew work. Sailors will rotate through positions on the boats, getting comfortable with all aspects of sailing and racing.
4:30-5:00pm – 7:30pm On-the-Water Coaching
Starting around 5:00, we will head out on the water for some drills based on the on-shore work of the evening. Depending on the level of interest and skills of the participants, we may conduct some very informal and short windward-leeward style races inside or just outside the Harbor (max 3). While on the water, LTS coaches will be on hand for coaching and instruction, though the goal is for the students to be the primary sailors of the boats. At about 7:30pm, we will return to the dock, de-rig the boats, and have a very short debrief sessions.
After the program the Little Traverse Yacht Club will be hosting an informal BBQ on the porch.
When & Where
In Summer 2017, we will offer this program on Thursdays starting in late June ending in mid-August. We strongly encourage you to sign up for multiple Thursday evening sessions, as the sailing and racing skills build on themselves, but you can also sign up for any number. All sessions will meet at the LTS waterfront – 383 E. Bay Street, Harbor Springs.
What you need to bring: Lifejackets must be worn shore-to-shore for all LTS programs, so we recommend bringing a Coast Guard approved lifejacket that fits you well. (If you don’t have one we have a few that may work.) Wear appropriate shoes for sailing — never bare feet or flip flops. Old tennis shoes work well. Depending on the weather you may want a windbreaker and/or spray gear to keep spray or rain off. Hats and sunglasses are important (as are leashes for them!). Apply sunscreen as needed.
The fee has yet to be determined for Summer 2017. Check back here for more information.
Registration for the Summer 2017 program will begin in April 2017. However, we are currently compiling a waitlist. Click here to sign up on the waitlist, and we’ll get in touch.
