The LTS Junior Race Team is a program designed to offer our sailors the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of sailboat racing in a low-key and fun environment, and discover if racing is something they are interested in. The Junior Race Team is offered all summer long as a part of the LTS learn-to-sail program. Practices take place Monday-Friday during the regular LTS class sessions. To get a quality racing experience, team members are required to sign up for a minimum of two consecutive weeks, but are free to do as many weeks as they like. While consecutive weeks are best, after two consecutive weeks, sailors can sign up for any remaining weeks and they need not be consecutive.
Who Can Join the Junior Race Team?
The Junior Race Team is designed for sailors age 10 and up who are comfortable and confident sailing on their own. Team members need to have mastered all points of sail, and basic boat-handling. Sailors will continue to work on the LTS Learn to Sail skill progression while on the Junior Race Team.
The Training Program
The objective of the LTS Junior Race Team is to grow a passion for sailing in participants. To achieve this, the team focuses on building a fun learning environment while teaching the fundamentals of racing. Sailors are challenged to improve their basic sailing skills while incorporating introductory racing skills and tactics. Most of our training takes place on Bugs and 420’s, with a focus on fun and building strong seamanship skills. Our Bugs allow team members to improve their single-handed sailing skills, and the double-handed 420’s allow team members to learn to work with a teammate to sail a boat well. The Junior Race Team is a great opportunity for younger sailors who may be interested in eventually joining the LTS Race Team, or who just want to give racing a try.
The LTS Junior Race Team will give its members to chance to compete in the LTS Hook Regatta in early August, as well as LTS-sponsored fun races, hosted at LTS throughout the summer. LTS has 10 Bugs for team members to train on, 13 new training 420’s, and 7 new racing 420’s. Additionally Junior Race Team members will be given opportunities to sail and train on some bigger boats, such as J/70s and Alerion 28’s.
Coaching for the Junior Race Team is provided by highly qualified racers, directed and primarily coached by our Director of Racing, Dan Thompson. Dan has over fifteen years of youth coaching experience and nine years collegiate coaching experience at one of the premier college sailing programs in the country.
